"Science in the instances of both business publicity and totalitarian propaganda is obviously only a surrogate for power,”

great point, and so true.

I don't trust any technocrat who couldn't plausibly outdeadlift me in their prime.

You could deadlift him with one hand I reckon.

To what extent is Harari informed by "mobilizing fictions" of his own? Despite his professed atheism, it seems that everything he is doing fits nicely into the end times vision of Lurianic Kabbalah.

I'd only got as far as asking the same question. You could be well ahead of me here. Just looked it up and Luria was known as Ha'ari. The name was adopted not by Yuval but by his father. Interesting deep dive to be had there.

I had no idea the "hackable animals" quote was from 2020, and here I thought I was so well-informed.

Like you, I find Harari ot be one of the creepiest propagandists to emerge in our lifetimes. I watched his most recent speech at Davos 2026 and he reminds me of some kind of revolting insect. Cockroaches seem almost cuddly in comparison.

The meme -- and all the 'that's over' stuff -- was based on interviews given around the same time, but my pullquote is definitely from his 2000 Davos speech. It's still there on the WEF/FEW website. https://www.weforum.org/stories/2020/01/yuval-hararis-warning-davos-speech-future-predications/
